This year I started making a TON of my own personal care products. When I first started using essential oils this concept terrified me and I didn't try anything for a year. I can't really explain why, but the process seemed overwhelming, what if it didn't work, don't I have to buy a ton of extra stuff, or why make it when I can buy it?
Then one of my friends pointed out that kids shouldn't be using regular toothpaste, almost ever. If it isn't safe for them to swallow then why would I let my two little ones swish it around in their mouth for a few minutes. If it's on your skin or in your mouth, your body will absorb it!
I decided to try it myself and make some toothpaste first. There are a million variations and you can use what you have on hand or try something fancy.
Side note on my DIY recipes: I'm totally Italian which means once I get the hang of a recipe I just use a dash, a pinch, or a glob. Go with the measurement that makes a good consistency for whatever you are creating!
My DIY Toothpaste Recipe:
1 Tablespoon of Coconut Oil
1 Tablespoon of Bentonite clay (re-mineralizes teeth!)
1 Tablespoon of Baking Soda
5 drops of doTERRA Peppermint essential oil
5 drops of doTERRA On Guard essential oil
Remainder with Vegetable Glycerin or Coconut oil until you like the consistency.
You will notice that the toothpaste doesn't get as 'frothy' or 'soapy' as you brush but your teeth will feel cleaner and for much longer. Plus, the baking soda can help whiten over time.
