Tree pose is my favorite yoga pose. It's one you don't have to warm up for and you can do anywhere. For me this pose makes me feel strong, calm, and focused.
To begin stand in mountain. Plant your feet in the ground and make yourself taller by standing up straight. Stack vertebrae one on top of the other. Knees are straight but not locked. Shoulders are back and down. Face is relaxed, teeth unclenched. Bring hands to praying heart center. Shift your weight slightly onto the left foot keeping inner foot firmly grounded on the floor. Bend right knee and reach down with right hand and grasp the right ankle. Draw right foot up and place sole against inner left thigh or below the knee on the calf. Rule of thumb is above or below the knee, never on the knee. Press into groin. Lengthen the tailbone toward the floor. Avoid jutting the hips. Keep both hips squared forward.
Tree pose relieves sciatica, improves balance, stretches groin, inner thighs, chest and shoulders. Strengthens thighs, calves, ankles and spine.
